Addressing the issue of unavoidable food waste by incentivising system.

Preventing food at home from being wasted should be top priority.

But for unavoidable food waste, turning it into high-quality compost makes perfect sense.

The current project includes design solutions for
  • Real-time updates & visualisations show users how their waste is transformed, and used, making the process transparent and engaging.
  • Incentive system rewards users with vouchers, providing economic benefits for participating.

02Problem Statement

02-01
Design Challenge

How might we encourage city residents to adopt sustainable food waste composting practices by incentivising the process?

02-02
Research

Our team conducted a brief, focused background study on the food waste issue in Australia and discovered the following key insights:

  • Australians waste 7.6 million tonnes of food each year as they are not aware of the long-term consequences or receive enough direct incentives to modify their behavior.
  • 34% of food waste occurs at a household level.
  • On average, household throw away $3,800 woth of food each year.
  • Millennials are the main culprit for food wastage.

02-03
Problem Statement

Common Approach
Based on the research, one of the most common approach for addressing food waste is preventing it at the household level.

Challenge
However, despite individuals’ best efforts to minimize food waste at home, some level of waste remains inevitable.

Key Question
How can we deal with this unavoidable food waste?

02-04
Uncovering the Insights

Challenge

Households with children under 17 report wasting considerably more food compared to the national average.

Therefore
For some users, some level of food waste are inevitable, making the process of turning it into high-quality compost a sensible solution.

Furthermore
Fewer than one in three Australian households have access to food waste collection services.

03 Ethnography Research

03-01
Key Insights

  1. Inevitable waste for working families with young children
  2. People are actively looking for ways to reduce food waste
  3. The need for information to start or access composting

04Design Solution

Core Idea

Scrap Asset provides a solution for handling food waste responsibly., creating long-term environmental impact by making the process engaging and transparent.

ScrapAsset addresses the issue of unavoidable food waste by creating an engaging, incentive-driven platform. Through visual storytelling, the app transforms food scraps into valuable resources, like compost for local farmers, encouraging sustainable behaviors.

By tracking users' contributions and rewarding their efforts, ScrapAsset makes waste management more efficient and rewarding, helping to reduce landfill waste while supporting local agriculture.

    How
    • The app rewards points for food waste disposal at weekly pop-up stations, redeemable for vouchers.
    • The city council runs a composting program in Ultimo using maggots, and the app will expand this to other areas.
    • Users find nearby stations, earn credits, and redeem rewards, similar to Flybuys or Everyday Rewards.

    What
    • Real-time updates & visualisations show users how their waste is transformed, and used, making the process transparent and engaging.
    • Incentive system rewards users with vouchers, providing economic benefits for participating.

    05Personal Reflection

The 24-hour design sprint was intense and challenging, particularly during the research phase. Our team faced significant stress as we discovered that many of our initial ideas for tackling food waste already had existing solutions. At one critical moment, just as we were finalizing our design, a team member uncovered new research that contradicted our earlier findings. Despite these setbacks, we persevered through open communication and collaborative brainstorming, ultimately resolving the issues and arriving at a refined, impactful solution.

This process of reflection and iteration allowed us to fine-tune our approach, ensuring it effectively addressed the specific needs of our audience.

My key contributions to the project included:
    • Generating and brainstorming ideas
    • Conducting in-depth research on the topic
    • Designing the user interface
    • Testing prototypes for usability and effectiveness
